They meant muskets, damnit!

The United States Constitution. Created on September 17, 1787. Ratified June 21, 1788. Effective March 4, 1789. The Second Amendment to the Constitution was added on December 15, 1791.

“A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” – emphasis mine.

“The Second Amendment was written during a time when people only had muskets. The Founding Fathers couldn’t have known about modern technology and rapid-fire guns!”

It’s an argument made fairly frequently in the crowds who wish to create gun control, or all-out abolish the Second Amendment. It seems reasonable, right? I mean… The revolutionary war was fought with muskets, right? So the Founding Fathers would have based their understanding of protection and owning “arms” on muskets, right? Seems simple.

Puckle gun. Girandoni air rifle. Pepper-box. Those three firearms alone render that argument invalid. Why? Because they all existed prior to the Second Amendment being added to the Constitution. Further, these are all rapid-firing implements.

Stop trying to use the “musket” argument. You’re obviously ignorant if that’s your position. Just stop.
